William Laurence Leamon

October 28, 1969 – June 12, 2022

Bill Leamon was not a spark but a blazing fire. Through his drive, compassion and visionary boldness, he achieved more and had a greater impact in his 52 years than most could hope to accomplish over several lifetimes. Bill lived big, dreamed big, and always made an impact. He met his wife Amy in Florence, Italy, while studying abroad in college and proposed to her on the day they met. She said yes on the spot, a legendary story they both delighted in recounting over their many loving decades together with their four sons, Tom, Kevin, Matt and Will. Bill is remembered for the integrity of his character, his kindness, his deep love of family and his passion for improving the lives of those around him. Indeed Bill’s entire life can be summarized as “the business of doing good.” Upon graduating from the Military College of South Carolina, The Citadel, Bill embarked on a broad range of business roles in sales, manufacturing and marketing at Black & Decker/DeWalt, AkzoNobel and Stanley. By his early 40s he was ready to trade the boardroom for the classroom in order to lead positive change in the lives of others, and transitioned to directing philanthropic funds through his leadership of The Business of Good Foundation in addition to teaching business courses at Cleveland State, Notre Dame College and Lake Erie College. Bill was a lifelong learner, always in the classroom — both as a student himself with 3 master’s degrees from Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State — or as a professor and mentor, leading and challenging college and high school students to be their best self. In his 10-year tenure at Notre Dame College, Bill founded the FirstGen Center, an innovative campus-based mentoring program designed to help low-income, first-generation students persist to graduation through proactive mentoring, positive role modeling and professional networking. He founded the Enterprise Development Center (EDC@NCD) for entrepreneurship-related academic and experiential learning, including an internship program that paired local nonprofits with student interns who received grant-supported compensation.  Bill brought in Northeast Ohio’s top community business leaders through his “Inside the Entrepreneurs Studio” lecture series to help tell the stories of starting and scaling the region’s most successful companies. Bill’s true passion for mentoring students came together in the social enterprise he founded, CollegeSuccess101.org. This venture comprised a video series, book, and live presentation that helped more than 15,000 Northeast Ohio students from over 100 high schools successfully navigate their college experience through preparation, mentoring and career coaching. Most recently Bill served as Director of the MBA Program & School of Business Outreach for Lake Erie College. Bill knew how to put big ideas into action. As his colleague put it, “If you ask Bill to help you get an entrepreneurship grant, he will write the grant, connect to other donors, partner with industry leaders, and build an entrepreneurship major with a renovated building.” Above all, Bill was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend to all. He continues to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Bill is the beloved father of Tom, Kevin, Matt and Will; former husband of the mother of his children, Amy Leamon; loving son of Gerald Leamon (Kathy) and the late Sally (nee O'Toole); dear brother of Dan (Ann Marie Riley), Mike (Ellen) and Ann Hardebeck (Mark); and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Passed away Sunday, June 12, 2022.
