Phyllis Irene Walters, age of 93, of St. Petersburg, FL, died at Bay Pointe Nursing Pavilion on January 1, 2023. She was born December 23rd, 1929 outside of Arkansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Herschel Charles Holman and Pauline Opal Nichols. She was a retired Registered Nurse, Nursing Supervisor and Instructor and an accomplished artist. She attended Wesley Medical Center School of Nursing thanks to an Edgar Bergen scholarship, graduating in 1950. Later she would attend the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she graduated with the B.A. in Psychology and Sociology in 1969. She served as a surgical staff nurse at Mercy Hospital in Parsons Kansas 1950; Instructor of Surgical Nursing at Wesley Medical Center 1951; Head Nurse, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Granite City, IL, 1960; Instructor of Nursing, St. Vincent's Infirmary, Little Rock , Ark, 1963; Instructor of Nursing, University of Arkansas, 1971; and Instructor of Nursing, Western Community College, Ft.Smith, Ark, 1975. She held registration to practice nursing in Kansas, Illinois and Arkansas and received a lifetime achievement award in nursing in 2021.
She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and served as a ruling elder in First Presbyterian Church, Van Buren, Ark., and First Presbyterian Church, Springdale, Ark.
Phyllis married Dr. Richard E. Walters, a physician and psychiatrist on April 9, 1950. Dr. Walters was a veteran of the Korean War and died December 31, 2012 in Springdale, Ark.
They had two sons, Robin Ellis Walters, who pre-deceased them in 1989, and Richard E. Walters of Miami, FL, an attorney and Director of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Services will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church, Springdale, Ark. On Friday, February 24 at 10:30am. Private Interment at Fairview Memorial Garden, Springdale, Ark.
