Martin Coughlin

Martin P. Coughlin, age 72 of Rocky River. Beloved husband of Mary Anne (nee Reagan); Loving father of Jennifer Coughlin Kennedy (Matt), Christine Coughlin, Carolyn Coughlin Butler (Dennis), Martin W. Coughlin, Laura Coughlin Toetz (Aaron); Papa of Caroline, Matthew, Ava, Paige, Dennis, Elliott, Sunny, Will, Collette and Corinne.  Brother of Frank (Janet), Tom (the late Sharon), Maureen and the late William.  Son of Frank and Mildred Coughlin (nee Grob).

Marty and Mary Anne had a marriage that’s hard to come by these days. They never imagined that a happenstance meeting at the Harry Buffalo on Marty’s 21st birthday would lead to a 50-year relationship, 5 kids, 10 grandkids, and a lifetime of beautiful memories.

Marty was a proud Lakewood boy and St. Edward Eagle. After graduation, he served in the United States Coast Guard. His service ignited a love of water and boating, which has been passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Cleveland Yacht Club hosted countless life-long memories. Marty was a proud past Commadore and Power Boater of the Year. As an avid boater, he captained the Family Affair, Seven C’s, and the Outnumbered. Summers were spent with his family of seven packed on the boat and traveling the Great Lakes. He lived for a good fight with a walleye, perch or steelhead and a cold dockside beer with old friends.

In addition to fishing, he a was pursuer of birdies and pars but settled for bogeys. He loved spending afternoons golfing with his dear friends. There were many “mandatory” work golf trips which helped him sharpen his skills. He was a proud member of the “hole in one club”.

As a master of hobbies, he brewed his own beer and made his own wine. He had an ear for music and taught himself to play the guitar. He ran a marathon, built model airplanes, loved a good ski trip, finished his own basement, grew beautiful roses and had a mind for chemistry and architecture.

Boca Grande, Florida was a home away from home. You could find him walking the beach with Mary Anne, taking a cruise in a golfcart, trying his hand at taming a tarpon, or taking in a sunset at the tiki bar.

His entrepreneurial spirit and humble character were operative to his success. He was a co-founder of Specialty Chemical Sales and prior to that Riverwood Products, Inc. It was no surprise that he quickly succeeded in business and sales. Before long, he became a mentor to others in the chemical industry. Many in the business attribute their success to his leadership and guidance.

He was known for his humility, easy-going personality, sense of humor and loyalty. He loved a good laugh even if it was at his own expense and cherished his friends and family. He genuinely cared about the well-being of others.

Marty created a beautiful life for his family but was perfectly happy with the simple things in life; a day fishing with his buddies on Lake Erie, dancing the night away with MaryAnne, a jam session on the porch with his son Marty and a house full of his kids and grandkids.
