Jacquelyn Rose Tompkins (nee: Skinner) peacefully passed away Thursday, May 5th, 2022 from a lengthy illness at the age of 86. She was born in beautiful Letter Gap, West Virginia in 1936. She grew up in Letter Gap and Normantown, WV. As a young girl she was a tomboy through and through. On any given day, you could find her jumping fences, climbing trees, exploring the enchanting hills surrounding her lovely home, or riding her bike (no hands!) down the biggest, winding hills. Jacque had an independent streak and got into all sorts of trouble! From junior high through high school, she was a cheerleader, majorette, class president, performed in theater, played the piano, clarinet and trumpet. She was crowned a Strawberry Princess at the annual Strawberry Festival in Buckhannon, WV. She attended Normantown High School. When she was 19, she fell in love with her sweetheart, Chet Tompkins. They were married in 1954 and moved to Elyria, Ohio, where she resided the remainder of her life.
Jacque loved singing and classical music (she even recorded an opera record). She also loved studying history, sports, talk radio and was a loyal OSU Buckeyes fan. Jacque was an avid WWII history buff and loved the poems of Robert Frost. You could always count on seeing her zipping around town in her red Volkswagen Beetle to church and dinners, where it seemed as if no matter where she went, everyone knew her name. She was strong, she was feisty. She was known for her loving generosity and kindness. She was a night owl, loved a good cup of coffee, and she was always right. She was loved.
Jacque was a woman of strong faith and faithfully served her Lord at St John Lutheran as President of the Altar Guild, President of the Woman's Council, Member of the Board of Directors, and served by assisting for many years at the church's Bi Annual Craft Shows and Rummage Sales as well as serving on the Bereavement Luncheon Committee.
Jacque is survived by her children Kathryn Carpenter and George Tompkins (Tena), her nephew Joseph Wayne Hersman (Lee), grandchildren Juston Carpenter (Alexa), Lauren Carpenter (Chris), Kelli Tompkins, and her great-grandchildren Zora, Scout, and Grant. She is preceded in death by her parents Lillian Westfall and Jesse Skinner, her husband Chester Tompkins, and her sister Nannette Hersman.
