Charlotte McQuilkin Robertson

Charlotte McQuilkin Robertson (nee Shumard), age 91, passed away January 9, 2022, in Westlake, Ohio.

Born June 5, 1930, in Mount Holly, New Jersey, to Charles Clio and Ruth Ola (nee Woodward) Shumard. Charlotte showed an early talent in art, winning First Prize in the Burlington County Scholastic Art Contest at the age of 15. Her love of painting was nurtured at Moorestown High School, and she went on to earn a Bachelor's in Fine Arts at Oberlin College. Following graduation, Char (known in her youth and college years as "Charlie") lived in Rocky River, Ohio, while working as a color consultant for Glidden Color Studios.

Charlotte married Don McQuilkin in 1953 and raised her five children in Lakewood, Ohio, where she was active in PTA, Lakewood Garden Club, Lakewood Historical Society, and many other church and community organizations. Char maintained an active life, painting and having art shows at Hixson's, playing tennis, teaching art classes to neighborhood children, singing in church choirs, Westshore Chorale, and Westshore Pops, and performing in shows at Huntington Playhouse and in The Group. Having divorced in 1979, Charlotte married Jim Robertson in 1997 and enjoyed having Jim join her onstage for many of her solo shows before his death in 2004.

As her children grew older, Charlotte went to work outside the home as Program Director at Barton Senior Center in Lakewood, where she used her creative and musical talents daily for over 20 years (1976-1999). Her legacy lives on with the annual "Charlotte Robertson Award." Each recipient is someone who makes a difference at Barton.

Anyone who knew Char knows she loved the limelight and loved to sing. She shared her singing talents in many programs through the years ("The Color of Music" being one of her favorites) and was always willing to teach calligraphy and give tips for painting, even teaching an art class at Brookdale Village where she enjoyed the last few months of her life.

Left to cherish her memory are children Leslie (Rich) Frank, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Craig (Dawn) McQuilkin, Safety Harbor, Florida, Karen (Jeff) Leavitt, Hixson, Tennessee, and Amy (Bill) Klutho, Chattanooga, Tennessee, grandchildren Jamie Frank, Matthew Frank, Mallory (Jimmy) Bailey, Joe McQuilkin, Ginny McQuilkin, Jacki McQuilkin, Gus Leavitt, Josh Leavitt, Ricky Leavitt, Charlie Klutho, and Donovan Klutho, great-granddaughter Josie Vaughn, as well as many friends, nieces and nephews, step-children, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Scott McQuilkin, siblings Chad Shumard and Ethel "Robin" Mastrocola (nee Shumard), niece Vikki Shumard Wolf, and nephews Christopher Shumard and Wes Shumard.
