Barbara was born on July 5, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio to Theodore and Mary Kaplysh. She passed away at Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Avon, surrounded by family on May 13, 2022. She is survived by her siblings, Ted Kaplysh (Mimi) and Bobbie Thompson (nee Kaplysh); niece Alison Ness (nee Thompson) (William); nephew Alexander Thompson; and great nephew Jordan Ness.
Barbara was a graduate of James Ford Rhodes High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Barbara earned a undergraduate degree at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. She later completed graduate degrees at the University of Denver and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
Barbara was an art teacher and potter. Her teaching career of thirty years was in the Berea City Schools. She was on the faculty at Ford Junior High School, Midpark High School and Berea Senior High. She impacted the lives of many students passing along her love for art and individual creativity. Through her art teachings students found a new way to express themselves and learned that each person is an artist in their own way. Barbara was also a leader in the "CARE" and drug abuse prevention programs in the Berea City Schools.
She spent her summers creating pottery at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Aspen, Colorado, where she worked with various well know artists from around the world. She enjoyed vacationing in Colorado and other areas throughout the western and southern United States. Barbara also enjoyed working in her garden, watching the birds on her patio and redecorating her home. In retirement Barbara continued teaching pottery to the general public at the "Little Red Schoolhouse" in Berea, Ohio. Barbara's talents and personality impacted all that knew her. She was admired by many, loved by all, and will be missed dearly.
